10 Retro Games You Can Play on Android for Free

Free mobile retro games to play on Android

Remember when PC games didn’t need massive downloads, expensive hardware or a constant internet connection? Many of those old games are still playable today, including on Android phones.

These aren’t modern mobile games with retro graphics. They’re original PC classics from the 1990s and 2000s, or free ports that bring the same gameplay to Android.

Unfortunately, not every classic PC game is available for free on Android, but there’s still a decent selection for mobile gaming fans. If you prefer playing on your computer, check out my list of freeware PC games you can download for free.

Here are 10 games you can play on Android without paying. Some are available directly from Google Play, while others require a little extra setup.

1. Commander Keen (1990)

One of the classic DOS platformers from id Software, long before Doom and Quake.

You play as Billy Blaze, an eight-year-old kid exploring alien worlds, collecting items and fighting strange enemies with his pogo stick.

The free Commander Genius app lets you play the original shareware content, including Commander Keen 1 and the demo of Commander Keen 4. The remaining commercial episodes aren’t included.

2. OpenTTD (2004)

If you spent countless hours building railway networks in Transport Tycoon Deluxe, you’ll feel right at home here.

OpenTTD is a free, open-source recreation of the 1995 classic. You build railway lines, airports, roads and shipping routes while trying to make your transport company profitable.

The Android version brings the same gameplay to mobile, although managing a large transport network is easier on a tablet than a small phone.

3. Dink Smallwood (1998)

An unusual RPG where you start as a pig farmer and eventually find yourself fighting monsters, exploring dungeons and saving the world.

Dink Smallwood is known for its strange sense of humor. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its charm.

The HD version is free and supports additional fan-made adventures called D-Mods.

Tyrian was one of the better examples. You pilot a spaceship, destroy enemies, collect money and upgrade your weapons between missions.

The Android port, OpenTyrian, includes four complete episodes without ads or in-app purchases.

OpenLieroX continues the gameplay of Liero Xtreme, with multiplayer, bots and plenty of customization. The Android version is best played with a controller.

Final Thoughts

Not every classic PC game has an Android version, and some older ports may have compatibility issues with newer devices. Strategy games are also generally easier to control on tablets.

Still, there are plenty of free retro PC games available for Android. From DOS platformers and adventure games to strategy and racing titles, these ports offer a way to revisit old favorites without a PC or paid subscription.
